Is Hard To Get Into TCU?

TCU is a very difficult school to get into.  TCU carefully evaluates applicants based on multiple criteria to decide who to accept and who to deny or waitlist.  In 2021, TCU had an acceptance rate of 47%, approximately 8,966 of the 19,028 students who applied.

Schools that are very difficult to get into, such as TCU, accept less than 60% of all applicants.  At least 50% of all admitted students have a grade point average in the top 10% of their high school class and scored above 1230 on the SAT and above 26 on the ACT. 

Admission to the Chancellor’s Scholarship Program, STEM Scholars Program, Community Scholars Program is an extremely difficult program.  It is moderately difficult to be accepted as a transfer student.

What Is TCU Acceptance Rate 2023?

The acceptance rate at TCU is 48%.  It ranks as the 8th lowest acceptance rate in Texas.  TCU is a more competitive school for admissions with a good chance of acceptance for qualified applicants.  Last year, 10,155 out of 21,145 applicants were accepted.

The school has very high admission requirements for SAT and ACT scores, usually accepting students in the top 30% (SAT 1110/1320 ACT 25/31).  Texas Christian University typically accepts and recruits students with average “B+” high school grades with an average GPA of around 3.68. 

Most incoming freshmen graduate in the top quarter of their class.  23% of those accepted decided to enter the school.

What Is TCU Transfer Acceptance Rate 2023?

TCU accepts 57.8% of transfer applicants, which is competitive.  To have a chance to transfer to TCU, you must have a current GPA of at least 3.64 – ideally, your GPA will be around 3.79.  In addition, you will be required to provide standardized test results.

Texas Christian University Admission Requirements

  • ‣ Official school transcripts – The school must send these directly to Texas Christian University.  They can be emailed to or mailed in a sealed envelope.  If submitted in a language other than English, it must be translated and accompanied by certified English translations.
  • ‣ ACT or SAT scores.
  • ‣ TOEFL/IELTS scores are proof of English proficiency.
  • ‣ Essay on one of the four topics provided by the university (300-400 words).
  • ‣ Academic letter of recommendation from a school counselor or teacher

  • ‣ Graduate students’ GMAT and GRE scores.

Students from other countries must demonstrate that they are fluent in English.  Standardized English proficiency test scores such as TOEFL, IELTS or equivalent are one way to achieve this. 

These exams are not required for students from English-speaking countries.  This is only for students who have excellent SAT/ACT scores.

TCU Transfer Requirements

Students who plan to transfer from another college or university must submit the following for admissions consideration:

  • Completed questionnaire;
  • Official transcripts from each college attended;
  • A $50 application fee;  and
  • High school transcript and SAT or ACT scores if less than 24 semester hours of translated work have been completed at the time of application.

  Admission to TCU as a transfer student is based on demonstrated ability to perform successfully at the college level.  The applicant’s overall track record will be evaluated taking into account the following:

  • Cumulative grade point average;
  • Quality of the curriculum;
  • Number of hours and average score in profile subjects;
  • High school transcripts and test scores (if there are less than 24 transferable semester hours at the time of application);
  • Extracurricular activities, achievements and honors;  and
  • Essay.

Applicant must be in good academic, disciplinary and financial standing and be eligible to return to all previous institutions.  Official transcripts must be submitted from each college attended, regardless of whether the work was satisfactory, unsatisfactory, or interrupted. 

Failure to disclose any part of a prior academic or disciplinary record is a serious breach of trust and will result in the student’s dismissal and loss of credit earned while attending TCU.

Evidence of acceptable academic qualifications from an accredited college or university and appropriate academic credentials are required.  A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 is required for consideration, although a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher is generally required for admission. 

Each application will be considered on an individual basis.  In most cases, more emphasis is placed on academic work completed in recent semesters than work completed in the more distant past.

What GPA Do I Need To Get Into TCU?

Applicants need very good grades in high school to get into TCU.  The average freshman high school GPA at Texas Christian University was 3.68 on a 4.0 scale, indicating that it is mostly B+ students who eventually graduate. 

The school ranks 11th in Texas for the highest GPA.  Even with a competitive GPA, getting into TCU will be difficult because the school turns away more applicants than it admits.

How To Apply To Texas Christian University

Applicants with high average GPAs and SAT/ACT scores.  However, TCU has a holistic admissions process that includes factors other than your grades and test scores. 

TCU’s admissions staff considers the rigor of your high school courses, your essay, your extracurricular activities, and your letters of recommendation.  Applicants may also benefit from an additional interview and Freedom of Expression submission.

Applicants may choose the TCU application or the Common Application.  TCU has an Early Decision program that can improve the chances of admission for students who are certain that the university is their best choice.

In addition to submitting documents and other required information, applicants must also pay a $50 application fee.  The deadline for submitting documents to the university depends on several factors. 

Fall applications, the most popular among students, typically begin in September and can run through April.  The September deadline is usually early decision, while the April deadline is. 

In particular, to be eligible for a scholarship, students may need to apply by the deadline.  Therefore, it is always recommended to apply in advance.


TCU acceptance rate is 41%.  To begin the application process, students will need to complete one of four possible admissions applications: the TCU App, the Common App, the Coalition App, or the ApplyTexas App.

The main advantage of choosing one application program over another is that the student already uses it to apply to other colleges and already has information about them.

Students can apply to TCU in the spring or fall.  Students interested in participating in the spring program must submit the entire application and financial aid information by November 1st.  For students who want to wait until the fall, the usual decision date is February 1st.

TCU also offers students the opportunity to apply outside of regular and spring decision times.  Students who are confident that TCU is the school for them have two opportunities to submit an early decision: November 1st or February 1st.

Admissions data indicates that TCU regularly admits students with an ACT of 25 and above.  Successful applicants typically submit ACT scores in the top 22 percent nationally.  In some cases, we believe a school will accept a minimum ACT composite score of around 22. Prospective students who submit an ACT composite score of 28 or higher should be in the top half of applicants, and students with a 31 or higher have a very competitive chance.
